A-x-Myxomycetes
2024 | ESC Medien Kunst Labor |
Graz, AT
A-x-Myxomycetes is a research project exploring collaboration with non-humans whose intelligence remains largely undiscovered. The project centers around myxomycetes, organisms that possess their own individuality and influence how electrical currents flow through their mediations. Acting as conductors of signal flow, these organisms control resistance, shaping the soundscape produced by the sculpture.

Myxomycetes have something that humans might describe as memory. They remember past interactions and use this knowledge to inform their future decisions. However, the exact nature of their thought processes remains a mystery to us.

Winfried Ritsch - Impulsantwort 2023

2023 | Re-Imagine the Future | Kunsthaus | Graz, AT
The computer measures spaces, cuts, isolates, and distorts sounds, creating a deterministic composition in real time. The music fills the space, and the space fills the music.

The sound material is an impulse, which is spatially recorded and forms both the score and the sound material through repeated resampling. The result is a sound space that plays the concert hall. A cello intervenes with phrases, enriching the sound space until it is overridden by it, and the computer sounds become a static musical space. For Space01 at the Kunsthaus Graz, a special Ambisonics version for the IKOsaeder loudspeakers was composed.

Solar Manifestation

2023 | Elektro Haus | Club Hybrid | Graz, AT
This sound installation, drawing on hardware from the Klangnetze project, hilghlights solar energy themes. An autonomous speaker, powered by a solar panel, that activates upon receiving sufficient sunlight. This setup manifests solar energy as a sound representation, reacting generatively to environmental sounds and synthesized speech, deliberately avoiding any association with specific individuals to emphasize the sun's egoless nature. The installation personifies the sun to blur the lines between individual human egos and the universal continuum of energy. By showcasing the sun as the primary life-giving force on Earth and underscoring its role in shaping our planet and solar system, the piece fosters a sense of unity with the natural world. It invites viewers to perceive themselves as part of a vast, interconnected system, driven by the sun’s energy.
